Within the context of the Jewish expulsion from Spain in 1492, modern scholars have used the term "crypto-jew" to refer to the group of Jews who converted to Christianity, yet still maintained their Jewish faith in secret. This is the ultimate form of opposition. They formed a sub-culture that creatively opposed the ruling authority.
